With the summer heat enough to make one tired even without moving, hearing the birds tweet and chirp gave me the opportunity to relax and be still for a while.

Textured with A Rural Journal's "Painted Sky No. 2"

I used to wonder why the birds don't get electrocuted, but I heard (through the old TV Show, "Beakman's World") that there's something about their feet which allows them to sit on high-tension wires.

Ready for another game of spot the birdie? I heard this one call on other birds, but because the tree was too high, this was the maximum zoom I could do, because if I still zoom on it more, it would look pixelated already.

I might be facing tiring chore yesterday, but thanks to these birdies, I was able to enjoy Mother Nature's gifts. Happiness do come in small packages...

....coupled with big zooms. :)

Magellan's Cross | Santo Nino de Cebu

It was through Ferdinand Magellan, who docked in the shores of Cebu in 1521, that made the Philippines a Catholic country. It is now the Holy Week for us Catholics, so for this post, allow me to show some church pictures I took in Cebu - the place where it all started.

The image of Santo Nino de Cebu is the oldest Catholic artifact in the Philippines, given by Ferdinand Magellan to the Cebuano tribe who became converts to Catholicism. That artifact is housed inside the Basilica Minore del Santo Nino, and every January, there is a very big religious festival known as the Sinulog, celebrated in honor of the Santo Nino.

The Santo Nino may be the most popular in Cebu, but their patron is actually the Our Lady of Guadalupe.

The Sacred Heart Church is possibly the only air-conditioned church in Cebu.

Just last year, Pope Benedict XVI canonized Pedro Calungsod as a Saint, and he was the second Saint to hail from the Philippines (first was St. Lorenzo Ruiz). His church is located within the compounds of the Archbishop's Palace.

A very memorable event during my first visit in Cebu happened here at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral. At that time, they were welcoming the image of Birhen sa Simala, and I (together with my brother and another friend) were blessed to be inside the compound of the church to welcome the image, as hundreds of devotees were there earlier than us but weren't allowed to enter.

These pictures were taken in 2009, during my first visit to Cebu. The capital city - also known as Cebu, has lots of churches, but even if one is quite close to the other church, expect every churches to be full whenever a mass is celebrated. I am deeply in awe at how religious people here are.

In 2011, I had the privilege to travel back to Cebu, and what a sweet blessing it was that I got to step inside the Monastery of Holy Eucharist (2 hours away from Cebu City), the home of Birhen sa Simala. Prior to this visit, I once told my sister I couldn't understand her personal connection to the Black Nazarene of Quiapo (that's a different story actually), but she told me in time I will understand. When I arrived here, I understood what my sister meant, because of all the Catholic churches I have visited, this one had an unexplainable connection to me. I actually ran the stairs from the base 'til I reach the top, but I didn't break a sweat and I never felt tired (even if it was a very sunny day and I didn't have umbrella) - something unusual because of my weight.

I always say that I am not really a religious person, but I do believe in God, and I have high respects for all churches, and for what people believe in.

These are just few of the oh so many churches in Cebu.
This practice seemed to have become a nature for me, because even if I am not doing a photo Project 365 anymore, I still take pictures from my Aunt's garden whenever I am there.

I don't know the name of this flower, but I love the little clusters of flowers forming a bouquet. Initially, I took a picture of this with the flower on the right side, but the wind kept blowing and when I hit the shutter it was already leaning towards the left side.
About a few years ago, most of the plants in her collection included different kinds of Euphorbia. These plants are very easy to take care of because it doesn't need constant watering, but they do have thorns. I don't know why Aunt Julie stopped collecting this plant, and why the very few left in her collection were placed near the very old outhouse, but because they still produce pretty flowers, I continued photographing them.

Nowadays, she's collecting all sorts of hibiscus plants. She has so many plants in her garden now, though not all produces flowers just yet. I was lucky during this visit because two plants had flowers - this and the white one (same kind). By the way, the two bottom stigma pads were touching my lens as I took this shot. Very impressive for this camera to produce great macro shots even if the lens is already way too close to the subject.

These three images above were taken January this year, before I traveled back home after my cousin's wedding.

This one was taken last 04 March before we left the house going to the cemetery. That scary, big mosquito caught my attention, so I grabbed FiFi (my Cherry Mobile Flare cell phone) and tested its ability to take macro shots. I am very impressed. :)

I am not sure when I will travel back to La Union, but hopefully when I return, Aunt Julie's garden will have lots of flowers for me to take pictures of.

Asian
{Canon Powershot SX130is}
23 March 2013

This should be an easy prompt for me because I am Asian... but it would be difficult to explain if I take a picture of myself, my family and/or my surroundings. We do have some Chinese vases here at home, but showing Chinese related pictures might be too typical, so I just took a picture of this.

I was already in college when McDonald's introduced the Happy Meal (as far as I can remember), and one of its toy collection that got the family hooked was this set of Snoopy toys in traditional costumes. My dad, my brother, and I would hop to different McDonald's outlets just to buy these toys, and because this comes with the meal (at that time they only offer the burger and a regular cup of drink), it would mean eating as much as 5 burgers in one day. I practically had to give away the burgers when I purchased 5 toys at once.

All in all, there are 28 toys, and these are just 5 of the many Snoopy figures wearing Asian costumes. From left to right - the Philippines (my country), Japan, Korea, Singapore, and Taiwan.

Wavy
{Canon Powershot SX130is}
21 March 2013

Last Thursday, my brother and I went to the Manila Diamond Hotel to attend the launch of Mega Creations Premium Sardines. Held at the Pisces Hall, located at the 27th floor of the hotel, I was able to see awesome view from the window (check my last post) including this. Nice to see a curvy/wavy designed pool rather than the usual rectangle ones...and the tiles on the floor of the pool provide a wavy effect on the water.

Draw
{Sony Ericsson K800i}
07 July 2012

This is from the archives, as I wasn't able to hunt one within the week. I took this while walking along the streets of Colinas Verdes, and the one who drew this used a stone. Quite impressive, I must say... I just hope in time it will be washed away because no one would want to have any kind of graffiti on their side of the road.
Soft
21 March 2013

Wasn't able to eat anything soft... wasn't able to photograph any soft object, so I will go for this, taken at the Manila Diamond Hotel (again). When I was still using the old point and shoot camera, I love freezing the water by photographing it using a forced flash. Over time, I got to see images taken by many photo hobbyists and was amazed at how they turn water as if they were soft clouds. I learned that one should go for 1/4 of a second to produce such effect, but going for this in the middle of the afternoon when the sun was super bright and shiny was very difficult. For me to produce this, not only did I go for 1/4 of a second, I also lowered the ISO and set the exposure to -2. I think it made the water soft... how I wish I can try this on a real waterfalls next time.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4750467992824083990.post-83545964787125815482013-03-23T17:43:00.000+08:002013-03-23T17:43:00.133+08:00On Our Way to Wawa Dam I got to meet a friend from the forum who works as a Forrester. He and I talk about many scenic places here in the Philippines (as he gets to go on different locations because of his job) and we've planned to check out some spots, too. Many years of friendship built within the chats and the forum (as well as a little of Facebook), we've finally set the date to meet and explore, and he asked me to tag along friends. My friend Nathalie is not only a blogger, but also a photo enthusiast, so she was my first choice to tag. One morning in January last year, all of us went to Wawa Dam.

I have seen different pictures from this place, but I was surprised to know going there wasn't really that difficult. Although we used Forrester Jeff's vehicle to get there, there were actually public modes of transportation going to the dam. We met up with some DENR (Department of Environment and Natural Resources) official to give us a little information about the area and their plans promoting it as a tourist destination, and after that we trekked to the dam.

Along the way, there were people - mostly kids - who were enjoying the cool waters. Some of these kids were living near the area, but there were also a few who went there for some family bonding moments, as there were areas where families and friends could stay at and have a picnic and dip in the water as well.

Before we went to check the dam, they gave us the privilege of checking out Pamitinan Cave, which was closed at that moment because DENR is protecting it against people who would ruin the cave by putting some graffiti. They told us stalactites and stalagmites take a long natural process to form and letting these heartless tourists ruin it would be a heart-breaker. Getting there, we needed to take the bamboo raft crossing the water, before hiking up to the cave. It was really a great adventure, and more pictures will be shared in the coming days.

Yesterday (Thursday, 21 March 2013), my brother and I went to the Manila Diamond Hotel for the launch of Mega Sardines - Mega Creations. The invitation stated it will start at 9am, and because we live far from the heart of the Metro, we had to leave very early so we won't be late. We arrived very early, though, and because we were already at the Pisces Hall of the hotel and I saw this view as we exited the elevators, I told brother I'd take the time to photograph the pretty decor.

That instinct to photograph the decor allowed me to see such magnificent view from the blinds:

View from the 27th floor. Uh-ma-zing! I took quite a lot of pictures... zooming here and there, until I remember my camera has the "miniature effect" setting, so I started playing with it and produced these pictures:

These self portraits came out as a surprise. I went closer to the wall decoration and saw my reflection. Remembering this week's prompt at Photo Art Friday, I took these pictures. It really is so nice when life presents a lot of blessings and surprises.

Happy weekends, shutterbugs!
It not only allows me to sit and rest for a bit, but it also allows me to discover many things.

My focus while walking is the path ahead of me, but I am also focused on capturing images of random interesting stuff, so not only were my eyes open, my ears are very open, too! I sometimes I amaze myself by seeing little creatures on the grass, or spotting an interesting grass formation... but the one thing that amazes me the most was whenever I get to spot some very fickle birdies.

I can hear them tweet, I sometimes see them fly right in front of me, but because they're quite sensitive, photographing them can be very difficult. What's annoying was that whenever I take just the cell phone (which only has digital zoom - and we all know how awful digital zoom can be), a very big, unique bird would just be there waiting for someone to notice it, but whenever I decide to take my camera, there wasn't one single birdie to take a picture of.

On this day, I got lucky. I saw some movements in the grass, and I knew I just have to find the bird. With many tall grasses and bright sunlight, it was difficult... but there it was, and I am one happy girl. :)
Checking old pictures can be unexplainable - my heart is filled with happiness that I was able to visit these places, as well as longing to get back there (praying to have a chance).

In 2008, I was able to set foot in Dumaguete City. At that time, K and I were on our first holiday, and from Bohol, we took the fast craft boat to the placed dubbed as "The City of Gentle People." We arrived late afternoon, and we had two full days in the city before flying back to Manila.

The city was just small, and one can roam around in one day. We have heard and read of other beautiful places near Dumaguete, but we weren't able to check any of it, because an ex boyfriend promised to tour us around, but wasn't able to. It was the last place on our holiday (we parted ways upon arrival in Manila), making us feeling a little tired, so there weren't pictures taken.

The very first thing we visited was the Dumaguete Church, and of course, we also took time to check the belfry as well.

At the base of the belfry, there's an image of the Virgin Mary.

The following morning, K and I walked to the Rizal Boulevard (also known as the boardwalk) to have our morning walk as well as to watch the sunrise. Up until now, this is still one of my favorite sunrise pictures, and I once used this as this blog's header.

Walking back to the hotel, we passed by the park where I took this picture. Then, I thought this was photographed nicely... and I like to believe so (until now), although I admit I made quite a poor composition on this one, because of the leaf on the lower left corner.

We were lucky to enter the Silliman University. I was able to get in without any problems (makes me think I still look like a student), but because K is a foreigner, the guards asked him what his business is. Technically, anyone can enter any university, provided you leave your ID at the guard, which you can claim as you exit. Good thing K brought along his passport, so we were able to see some areas in the university. The structure in this picture is the chapel, which belongs to the Protestant church.

K and I loved seeing a lot of people at the boardwalk, so later in the afternoon, we made a stroll back there. I saw this statue somewhere along the boardwalk, and although I loved how crisp this image is, another poor composition I made for not incorporating the surrounding - maybe letting the viewers a peek of the sea.

I started taking pictures in 2007. From then 'til now, I have used a point and shoot camera, which allowed me to be a little stagnant as far as learning more knowledge and having practice is concerned. Still, comparing old pictures to the new ones, I'd like to say I have made a little improvement.
Some fellow citizens do have a lot of complaints about the country - a few even badmouth how ugly the country is just because they have seen different countries (rants on a separate post), and while I recognize that we all do have the right to voice out opinions, I just hope certain people would also see how beautiful their own country is.

I don't travel that much (due to financial constraints), but whenever I do, I make sure I not only savor the moment, I also take the time to taste their food, discover their culture, and interact with the locals. Last year (April 2012), I was able to travel north and here are just a few of the many pictures I took during the three-day adventure.

It really makes me happy to photograph different flowers... and if there's a critter next to it, all the better.

I love watching travel-related shows, I love to browse travel magazines, and it makes me happy seeing places with my own eyes after seeing them on TV or magazines.

Likewise, I also love it when friends share their latest travel pictures or blog posts, because it allows me to know of places in my country I never knew existed.

Traveling for me isn't all about photographing different scenery, I also love eating different food - like this Pinakbet Pizza at Herencia Cafe. Pinakbet is a native Ilocos vegetable dish (string beans, eggplants, tomatoes, ampalaya, and squash cooked in fermented fish paste), and eating it pizza style was such a scrumptious discovery. Of course, part of my travels is entering different Catholic churches, and this particular travel allowed me to enter the Paoay Church, one of the four baroque churches in the Philippines, and the last of the four I visited.

For me, traveling alone gives me joy, but traveling with friends and family makes me happier.
This quote by Jawaharlal Nehru was such a fitting words of wisdom. Each place can be ugly or pretty to someone, depending on how they see it. For me, even if I have to return to a familiar place, one lesson I have learned is to see the world with a fresh set of eyes, and in doing so allowed me to have a much better visit than I had before.

So far this year, I have only traveled to La Union and Benguet. I am not sure if this will push through, but my brother told me some of his friends are planning to do a church hop in the province of Laguna, something I am looking forward to. What's very certain is that in a few months, I will be traveling with my dear friend K, exploring places such as Guimaras, Corregidor, Bataan, Boracay, and Iloilo.
On the get go, it is very obvious that I would go with a Hanson song as they are my most favorite band and they do have a lot of songs with inspirational lyrics. I wanted to go with:

"The Great Divide"
I find hope and it gives me rest | I find hope in a beating chest | I find hope in what eyes don't see | I find hope in your hate for me | Have no fear when the waters rise | We can conquer this great divide

or maybe

"Dying to be Alive"
And we all go tumbling down | No matter how strong | We all return to the ground | When the day's come,
Say 'Why did I wait?' | You can't just leave your life to fate. | You've got to turn it around | Before it's too late.

However, it is difficult for me to find suitable images for these awesome words. I know there might be an image that could best represent either one of these song lyrics, but with image files dating back to 2007, I just can't go through every DVDs I have especially that I am pressed for time as I am doing assignments and have to exercise as well. I wanted to go with something easy for me, so I chose this:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/janujennifer/8568192928/" title=""We Are Young" by janujennifer, on Flickr"><img alt=""We Are Young"" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8523/8568192928_f997a4f0cb_z.jpg" width="600" />

Fun.'s "We Are Young," which won 2013 Grammy Awards' "Song of the Year." Lately, I have been listening to their songs over and over, and although this isn't my favorite song, just having the line "We Are Young" made me remember this picture taken during the Surf Break in 2011, with my sister and our cousin.

Actually, my final image is a product of combining two images. On the left is a picture of myself and cousin Mhai (which my sister took), and on the right is a picture of cousin Mhai and my sister (which I took). Now, I can just go ahead and use the image I took, but I felt there was a big gap between the sun and my sister, so I decided to make a selection on myself on the other image, cut it, and pasted it in the image.

Anyway, when Fun. received their Grammy trophy, lead vocals Nate Ruess said, "I don't know what was I thinking writing the chorus for this song; this is in HD, everyone can see our faces and we are not very young." Well, regardless of what our real age is (I am actually 2 years older than him), we are all young and we can be carefree at times.
But what happens when festivals are stripped of color?

These are just two of the many images I took from the very first Panagbenga Festival I attended. These were originally shot in color, and I just processed them using GIMP to make it black and white. I don't know which I like more (color or b&w), but whatever format, it looks pleasant to me. Seeing these in black and white gives that textbook or newspaper feel to it, and I like it, too.
Prior to its death, I have hoped of buying a Smart Phone because I felt so disconnected whenever I leave home. I know I shouldn't be online wherever I will go, but as a blogger who attends events every now and then, staying connected is very helpful to share certain things from the event on real time. My old phone lasted more than 5 years and I found it pretty durable - have dropped it way too many times, so I dreamed of owning a Sony Xperia, most specifically the Arc S because it's waterproof, but it was just too expensive. When my phone died, I had a few days to decide which phone to buy.

During the Baguio trip with fellow blogger friends Jen and Iris, I got to see them use their own smart phones - both carrying the My|Phone brand. I wasn't able to ask them their opinions about their phones, but I liked the images they shared on their Instagram pages. I don't know why... but one thing I considered about what smart phone to buy was its camera. I wanted to buy the same phone as theirs, but the stores at the mall near our place don't have stocks for that specific model.

I was exchanging text messages with my cousin Jayson (who's such a gadget guy) asking for his opinions as well as asking him to check online reviews of whatever smart phone model I think looks good, and in the end, he suggested I get this:
Cherry Mobile Flare. Weeks ago, one of my Facebook friends posted her picture of this same phone and when I asked if it was a good buy, she said it is, considering its price. Standard retail price for this phone is 4000 pesos (approximately 100usd), but I bought mine at 4500 pesos...but that's because it comes with a spare battery. Battery life is this phone's main problem, so I thought it was a good thing to have a spare one on stand by.

I named the phone FiFi - taken from Flare and WiFi. True, its battery doesn't last 24 hours when you're using it, but because I still haven't bought a memory card (therefore I haven't downloaded a whole lot of apps yet), battery life goes about nearly two days for me.

Camera? I can say I am satisfied, too:
All SOOC images - I want to show its real photo quality.

I still haven't tested its ability to take images under low light environments, but it does an awesome macro! Unlike my old phone which I have to turn the macro function on, the camera of this phone requires a tap on the screen to focus on what I want to highlight. For example, when I took the sunset picture, if I tapped on the pool area, it will wash out the sun and give more light on the pool area, but because I tapped on the sun, I came out with this image. Back to the macro function... crazy focus it created on the second image - it was able to highlight the mold (was it? I don't know... I just saw it in the garden growing on the iron rods) and blurring the rest! Ahhh... I love this phone! :)

It was just recently that I discovered it has a panorama function, too, but I still haven't used it. Although, comparing it with my old phone, it doesn't have the White Balance function and it cannot create straight up Black and White and Sepia images (but you can edit your picture and turn them into sepia or black & white), but it does have a night and action modes.

Challenges I have with using the phone as my camera...it was a little sensitive with movements, and I admit the first few images I took were all blurred! Well, it's still new and I am still learning the ropes of using a touch screen phone; in I will get better in taking pictures using this phone.

Hopefully by next month I will be having my own Instagram page, too! :)

PS - I bought the phone using my own money. :)
Aside from this, I have a travel blog (which I surely need to update again), a personal blog, a blog I share with my sister, and a food blog. I am not a popular blogger, but among these five blogs, I have to say it is the food blog - Tara, Let's Eat! - that has the most visitors.

Now that Internet is part of one's necessities, it has become a practice for companies to tap bloggers into attending their events to help spread the word. Of course, bloggers have all the right to say their own opinions - bad and good, and even if I don't receive that much invitations (compared to some of the bloggers I meet at different events), I sure am blessed to not only receive invitations, but receive some goods in exchange of my honest opinion.

Here on my photoblog, I noticed I don't share that much food pictures, maybe because I focused on the food blog to be the haven of my foodtography. For these post, allow me to share pictures from the food events I attended from February of this year, along with several foodtography blahbbies.
Manang's Chicken - SM North EDSA
08 February 2013

I received a voucher from Manang's Chicken (one of my current favorite Filipino-owned fast food places) to try their newest offering, and I was truly impressed at how good their food is. This very lean cut of pork looked dry, but it was really tender and flavorful.

My style: Whenever I am presented with plated rice meal, I always take a picture of the rice behind the viand, but if I end up using a picture with the rice in front, I'd make sure it will show more of the viand and less of the rice.
The Sweetest Thing (A Valentine's Picnic Dinner) - Rockwell Tent, Makati
14 February 2013

Oh lookie... I got to celebrate Valentine's Day this year! :)

Challenge: Taking a picture on low-light environments

My Style: As much as possible, I want to showcase everything on the plate. It doesn't mean I have to focus on everything, sometimes I partly hide certain elements in the image. I don't know if I photograph this one well, but I decided to turn my plate so that the fish is at the front and the beef behind, because if I place the fish at the back, the color will blend with the white plate and would make it more unnoticeable. Since the beef is dark, it is still seen even if it's not the focal point.

At times, distancing my camera away from my subject won't create a depth of field. Editing this image, I made a selection around the plate so I could blur the cluttered table.
Figaro Fort Pointe Opening Day - Bonifacio Global City, Taguig
18 February 2013

For the opening of Figaro at Fort Pointe, I was given the privilege to choose whatever food I wanted to eat. My first choice was this pasta, and I was happy I made a great choice this time, as I always end up having bad choices whenever I eat out. This tasted good, but I gotta say, my favorite Figaro pasta will always be their Aglio Olio.

My Style: I love, love, love taking food pictures real close to the point that my camera lens are already a few millimeters close to touching the food. On this particular food trip, our table was quite low that if I take pictures of my food at the plate level, it will show the legs of some customers on the background - something I don't like. As much as possible, I try to avoid unnecessary clutter in my images, especially the arms, elbow, legs, and feet (before I didn't mind, but when I attended an event and I was seated next to a culinary magazine's associate editor, she mentioned how she loathed having someone else's hand or elbow on her food pictures). This often causes for me to have little arguments with my family - whoever is in front of me because I would always ask them to move a little so my camera won't capture parts of their body. If it's really unavoidable - like when I take pictures of drink and my brother or mother is right smack in front of me, I'd then use several props, such as the restaurant's menu as my background.

French Macarons from Max's Corner Bakery
18 February 2013

Max's Restaurant hosted a movie screening, and part of their giveaway was this set of French Macarons.

My Style: I often experiment with photography, but whenever I take pictures of cookies and pastry bars, I try to stack them to achieve height. Doing that technique with these macarons was a bit tricky because I had to make sure I show each of the colors. Of all the macarons, the brown one looked the most appealing as it shows the merengue and the filling, so I placed it at the top and aimed my camera looking down.
Culinary Dialogue with Glenda Barretto - The Maya Kitchen
23 February 2013

I love attending the featured cooking classes at The Maya Kitchen because not only do I get to learn new recipes, I also get to pick tips and tricks from the featured chef.

My Style: Whenever there are two plates of the same food, I try to use the other as the background. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't. For this image, I went for the usual style when photographing food - with the camera at the top looking down. To create contrast, I rotated the plate behind so that the prawn's tail would be opposite of the plate in front. Although, I admit I should've moved the top plate a little to the right.

Food Tasting Event at Ristorante Bigoli - Eastwood City, Libis
28 February 2013

Ristorante Bigoli is my choice whenever I want good yet affordable Italian food, so when a blogger friend asked me if I could join this intimate (meaning only a few bloggers were asked to join) food tasting event, I immediately said yes.

My Style: I always try to show the restaurant's name on the plate whenever possible.

Foodgasm (Take a Second Bite) - Mercato Centrale, Bonifacio Global City
09 March 2013

Foodgasm is an event showcasing up and coming food businesses in a friendly taste-off. Attendees line up to get samples from each of the concessionaires, taste their food, and rate them. I wasn't able to finish the program, but I did my part of rating each of the samples and choose the one which gave me a foodgasmic experience. I sure had problems taking pictures because of the low light environment, added with blue toned lights that seemed to affect the look of the food.

My Style: Upping the ISO of my camera result in noise, so even under low-lit environments, I still take pictures of the food and rely on GIMP to help me achieve the look I wanted. Thanks to the "curves" tool, I was able to control the lightness of the image - making it appear less dark. Yes, I do use GIMP to edit my images, but use less of it on food photography... but as you know every rule has exception - this, being it.
Flourish Pilipinas Media Launch - Crowne Plaza Hotel, Ortigas
13 March 2013

Yesterday, I attended the media launch of Flourish Pilipinas, a competition spearheaded by Universal Robina Corporation (Flour Division) and the Department of Tourism to help promote the flour / bread / pastry industry in the Philippines. At the event, we were served lunch and we had Bistek Tagalog (beef steak) for the main course.

My Style: If it is my food, I usually arrange some elements to achieve the image I want to produce. When this was served to me, one of the onion rings was already on the plate (not on top of the beef) and the green bean was behind the cauliflower.

I will be the first to say that I am not a great photographer...but I am very much willing to learn. With my food blog as the one with the highest visitor count, it is only normal for me to strive more so I could show good images. Part of the perks for attending events is the free food, but one of the things I love attending events is the possibility of me learning something new from my fellow bloggers. I can't afford to attend a photography class and my camera is not recommended (most classes I see often requires participants to own a DSLR camera), so during food events, I also try to interact with fellow bloggers - sometimes check the way they capture an image and learn from it.

Photography is an endless learning process, for sure.
Care to share some photography tips? It will be a great help.

These three pictures above were taken in 2009, 2010, and 2011 at the Thunderbird Resorts in Poro Point - San Fernando, La Union. Before, this place was called Wallace Air Station (Camp Wallace) - a United States Air Force facility. In 1991, the place was turned over to the Philippines and the local government turned it into a place for tourism. Currently, this is the home of a 5-star luxury hotel/resort, which patterns after Santorini in Greece.

Whenever I am in La Union, I usually take the time to visit the resort to eat, check the scenery and watch the sunset. I wasn't able to visit the resort the entire 2012, so when I visited the resort with my family nearly two weeks ago, I was surprised to see a big change:
If you're visiting the resort and you took any of the public transportation (tricycle and jeepney), you would need to walk close to 500 meters before you get to enter the resort. Apart from the long road, there is a huge land space, and now they are having a housing project.

Checking the model houses, I was quite amazed at the architecture, which really looks a lot like Santorini. I can imagine this in the future... when the entire place will have houses, it will look so interesting having the white and blue theme.

However, I heard it cost way too much to own a house here. Don't quote me on this, as I just heard it from the people around, that it cost millions to get a house and lot here. Millions of pesos...two-figure kind of millions. Whoa. I hope what I heard wasn't true, because if it is... it would be way too impossible for me to even dream of having my Santorini home. :)

This picture I took during my cousin Marge's garden wedding at Oasis Manila. Sister and I arrived at the venue quite early, so we took the privilege of roaming around for subjects we could capture. I found it nice that sister now has her own camera, which meant we could set a photo walk soon.

Anyway, there were quite a lot of water lilies near the bridgeway - some white with yellow center, some purple, and a few pinks. Some flowers were too far so I had to rely with the zoom, but this one particular lily was close enough for me to bend over and take a macro picture. However, the fear of me falling over or me accidentally letting go of my camera into the pond caused me not to create the depth I wanted, so for my edit, I made sure the focus is going to be on the flower (and the cute bee) and not on anything else in the image.

Like I always do whenever I wanted to create that depth of field, I start with the original size (2816x2112 pixels), and made a selection around the flower and its stalk, feathered it, and made an inverted selection.

Using the Gaussian Blur tool, I blurred the selection at 25px. Resized the image to the usual size (640x480 pixels) and used the "Fake HDR Plus" action to create quite a dark and strong image.

I then added a layer of Kim Klassen's "Happy Heart" texture, set to screen at 40%. I opened another Kim Klassen texture - "Shine", and ran the "Sunshine Action" to it to change a little of its tone. This edited texture I layered on top of my water lily image, set to Overlay at 80%. Flattened the image.

Final steps I usually do then follow - National Geographic script, Burn tool, then Unsharp Mask.

Creating edits are always random. I have downloaded a few scripts and actions from the GIMP Registry, and at times I try to use the actions/script that are rarely used. If it works, I'd proceed, if not, I will go back a few steps. There are times the final edit won't satisfy me and would go back to the first step, but for this image, everything just came together, making this one of the fastest edits I have done.

I just finished doing a Zumba workout, and while relaxing, thought I'd update the blog and share you this:

I took this last year when I traveled to Hundred Islands in Pangasinan with my Aunt Bing, her family, and two of her friends. This was the glorious sunrise I saw from the balcony of our hotel room, giving me renewed strength to carry on with the day. I rarely see sunrise, so every sunrise I see is always personal.

I welcome my new week just as I welcomed the day I shot this image - with renewed strength. I will be stepping out of my comfort zone (again) to rekindle my love affair with fitness and dieting, hoping this time around I'd be victorious.
However, I always tend to forget the prompts until Saturday of each week, and I found it was too late to hunt for pictures. Last week, I was able to hunt all images, but I got home Wednesday, so even if I posted my entry, the linky wasn't open anymore. :) This week, I am pleased to be back.

Before I share my images, I was surprised to know that the last Scavenger Hunt Sunday post I made was 23 October 2011. Whoa, more than a year ago?!? Seriously?!?
#5

Day #5 of March is a day of mourning and celebration for us in the family. Mourning the loss of the family's main man (dad), but also celebrating the day he finally broke free from pain and struggles by re-joining the Lord. This year, the whole family was there to light a candle on his grave as well as say some prayers.
Word of the Day

I was thinking hard how to interpret this prompt... should I go and open the bible to read today's word, should I go out and look for some inspirational quotes and statements? My questions were answered when awesome, nice people from Jollibee came to our house to deliver a bucket of Tuna Pie last Friday. Word for the day was "Lent," and this delivery reminded me that I always forget to go meat-less (no pork, chicken, or beef) during Fridays while it is Lent.
Sharing

It was still early to check the sunset from the boardwalk of Thunderbird Resorts, so we decided to enter Olives Restaurant for some snacks. The menu offers "appetizer" and "full" servings of pasta, and thinking we were just there for snacks as we also planned to eat dinner elsewhere, we went for the "appetizer" sizes. Telling the wait staff our orders, she even asked us to confirm if we would want the "good for one" sizes. When the food was served, we were surprised to see it wasn't good for one at all, but good enough for sharing. Mom gave brother half her pasta serving (as brother only went for a slice of chocolate cake for his snacks), but all of us were quite full after that, that we decided not to eat dinner anymore.

In case you wanna know, I had the Seafood Alfredo, which has scallops, salmon, cream dory, and shrimps. Muy delicioso!
Wiggle
03 March 2013
Cherry Mobile Flare

Whenever I am in Baguio City and I'd travel along Leonard Wood Road, this white house never fail to capture my attention. Later I found out that this is the ever famous haunted house in Baguio City, which has been closed for quite a long time. When Lucio Tan bought it, it became open to the public, and there was even an exhibition inside (Bamboo Crafts). Thinking it would our chance to finally enter the house, the family decided to pay it a visit. We didn't see any ghosts or hear unnecessary noises (thank God), but there was this scary, big picture that truly made us wiggle in fear and laughter. Initial reaction was fear, but after the screams and the sweat beading up on the forehead, we couldn't help but laugh about how we reacted. I wanted to take a picture of that scary image, but decided not to because if I share it here or on Facebook, it would defeat the purpose of having that image inside the house. Besides, I truly couldn't give it a second glance as it might stick in my mind.
Cookies
10 March 2013
Canon Powershot SX130is

When I covered an event in SM City Baguio last 20 February, part of the goodies given to us was a tin of Danish Cookies. I took home quite a lot of food items from Baguio that time so I told the family not to open the tin of Danish Cookies and wait until we finish eating the other goodies I bought first. Well, this prompt made me open the tin, and it was just a perfect timing because we have already consumed the other pastries and cookies.
Coming home from a recent Baguio Trip filled with images and stories to share, mom thought it would be great for us to travel to Baguio, too, since dad's death anniversary would fall on a Tuesday and she has the full weekend off at work.

Mom, brother, and I left the house 11pm of Friday (01 Mar), but it was already 3am of Saturday (02 Mar) that we were able to leave the bus terminal (way too many people, all buses were fully booked). It totally blew off my plans since we arrived in Baguio City at nearly 10am and it took time before we found a hotel to stay at. Still, with things not going as planned, it was a great time to be with the family.

I was thinking what pictures to share and thought I'd do another "favorites" post. Quite a lot of images taken this time around (compared to my last Baguio Trip), so I chose to choose just one favorite per day, just to make this a concise post. It doesn't necessarily mean that these are best images (for there are a lot of much better pictures than these), but I guess you'll have to agree with me that sometimes... those that end up taking a space in our heart aren't always the best ones.
Mines View Park - Baguio City

I planned to visit the Cemetery of Negativism and the Philippine Military Museum for the early part of this day, but because it was already near lunch time when we left the hotel, we decided to just roam around nearby places. Mines View Park was the very first place we visited, and this one was taken before we went to the view deck.
Laperal White House - Baguio City

Sister arrived in Baguio City around midnight. We welcomed the day by visiting the Strawberry Farm in La Trinidad (next town) before taking an Eco-Tour around the Tam-Awan Village where us girls joined some Igorots for a traditional dance. After waiting for a long time to be seated at 50s Diner, I figured it would be nice to visit the Laperal White House, known more as the ever famous Haunted House in Baguio City. I don't know the stories of people who experienced paranormal activity, and we didn't feel any spirits inside the house, but there was this part that would give anyone the scare. I was just thankful that I already climbed the stairs going to the topmost floor of the house before I saw the big scary picture. :)

I truly wanted to stay longer in Baguio... but we had to take the 6pm bus going to La Union.
Thunderbird Resorts - San Fernando, La Union

This was the only full day in La Union with the whole family, so we made sure this day was jam-packed as well. We first visited dad's grave, then we had lunch, then we went shopping for a while, then we went to Thunderbird Resort to wait for the sunset.
Forest Lake en Cielo - San Juan, La Union

As painful as it was to be reminded of this day as the day when we lost the main man of the house, I still felt great that we commemorate this day as a whole family. We have accepted his death, but we still miss him, of course. Sister left after that short visit... mom, brother, and I went to Ma-Cho Temple and had lunch at Halo-Halo de Iloko, then we took a much needed rest at home and traveled back to Manila around 10pm that night.

I don't know if sister and I will be traveling back to La Union this Holy Week, I hope we will.
I have been experiencing problems with the phone since last year - battery drained pretty much instantly (especially when I turn the camera on or whenever call was made), and at times it would light up and turn off by itself. Weeks before it died, I'd always get a message saying "menu file is corrupted" whenever I go to the menu page. I knew it has been with me for more than 5 years and probably it was time for retirement, but of course, its death came unexpectedly. I was taking a picture of my cat and after two shots, it turned off by itself and turning it on, it would only show the wallpaper and no matter what buttons or keys I press, it would only show the wallpaper. Thankfully, images were saved on the memory card, so I only need a memory card reader so I could access all the images I haven't transferred on my net book yet.

As some sort of a tribute, I decided to share these two images taken using my Sony Ericsson K800i cell phone.

I took these July last year. Coming home from an afternoon walk, I saw this butterfly in a neighbor's garden. It's quite rare for me to see butterflies here in our neighborhood despite houses having gardens and flowering plants. When I saw this beauty, I knew I had to take my chances capturing pictures using my cell phone because if I walk back home to get my camera, it might not be there anymore.

Thankfully, my cell phone has a very awesome macro function, which allowed me to take these pictures. It flew after five pictures (I let my cell phone get really close), so I was super duper thankful that I captured these images worthy enough to be shared on the blog.

I don't know if I will encounter a great cell phone camera again, but for the five fruitful years, I am thankful for having Cysho as my photography warrior.
I wasn't able to update my blogs while I was away, so in my efforts to update this blog, let me share these pictures, taking cue from Ashley's Scavenger Hunt Sunday prompts.

Red
Second day in Baguio City with the family, we decided to welcome a new day by visiting the Strawberry Fields at La Trinidad, Benguet. I was thankful having to meet a nice taxi driver, who took a different route going to the area as the main highway was very busy. We didn't pick any strawberries, but the farmers and vendors were also kind enough to let us take pictures to our heart's content.

Orange
This picture marks the "premiere" of my newest soldier, FiFi... my new smartphone. After eating lunch at the 50s Diner, my camera's battery drained, so I was left with no choice but to use my phone to capture images from our next destination. I still have to train myself using this phone as a camera (and I have to buy a memory card should I want to capture more images), but this one turned out good - giving me more reasons why I loved choosing this <strike>cheap</strike> affordable smartphone.

Yellow
This I took at the Mines View Park, which is also a good place to shop for souvenirs. Among the many things for sale are different kinds of plants, and since we didn't plan to buy one, I just took the pleasure of taking flower pictures.

Green
A shot from the taxi's window (taxis in Baguio and nearby towns don't use air conditioning system as the weather is fairly cool) on our way to Tam-Awan Village. Aside from the strawberries, farmers here also plant different vegetables - lettuce, cabbages, leeks, and broccoli among others. This is a shot of the lettuce fields. Looks like these are bound to be harvested real soon.

Blue
Interestingly, I wasn't able to photograph "blue" pictures... so stretching this prompt a bit by sharing the blue-lighted chandelier I photographed at the lobby of Eurotel Baguio, our first choice of hotel to stay at. We arrived in Baguio around 9:30 am and Eurotel won't allow us to check in until 1pm, so we decided to leave and find a different hotel.

Hope you are all having a great week so far... happy hump day!

Here in our place, it is very typical for me to see the little brown birds, which often do some sort of a convention on the big trees nearby. Seeing and hearing them every day (early morning and late afternoon), I am already used to them, so whenever I hear a different kind of tweet, I knew I just have to spot it and photograph it. That was the story behind this little birdie... and I was lucky when I saw it on the top part of the gate. However, as much as I wanted to take lots of pictures, the lighting condition seemed to not allow me.

Luckily, even if it flew, it didn't really flee away for it found a resting place on one of the tree branches in our garden. I couldn't come near it (fearing my presence would scare it), so I just spied on it and found a good way to capture its images through the window.

I will just let the pictures speak for themselves:

Isn't it pretty?

Well, the yellow part was quite small, but seeing a different kind of bird every now and then excites me.
{My entry for Texture Tuesdays}

The prompt this week was "Dreamy" and I truly had a difficult time thinking what to share, until I saw this picture. Original image had more space... I actually cropped out one more dancer at the right side of the image to make the spacing tight. On one of my previous posts, I did say that I love my camera's abilities to blur backgrounds (making the subject clear), but one of the bad things I didn't like about this camera is its limited abilities to capture moving subjects. The space was well lighted, but it cannot really freeze moving subjects clearly, thus some of the elements appear blurred.

Editing this image, I first made a selection around these four dancers using the paths tool... feathered the selection at 5%, made an inverted selection and blurred the background at 27%. This step I used over and over on selections near the dancers' arms and faces to achieve a uniform blurred look. From the original size, I then cropped it to 1000x750 pixels and made a rectangle selection of 640x480 pixels. From there I made these steps:

Applied the "Mute Colors" script, using desaturated overlay to tone down the colors.

Added a layer of Kim Klassen's "Poetic" texture, set to overlay at 80%.

Added a layer of Kim Klassen's "Trust" texture, set to hard light at 25%. Flattened the image.

Applied the "Urban Acid" script at 20%.

Ran the "National Geographic" script, using my preferred settings.

Ran the "Romantic" script, with layers tweaked a bit so it won't be too rosy.

Flattened the image and added my watermark.

For this prompt, the blurred body parts worked good because it appeared dreamy. Still, capturing moving subjects proved to be difficult for me.

February is probably the biggest month for Baguio City because it's this month that they hold the Panagbenga Festival - the festival devoted to flowers, as "Panagbenga" meant "bloom." The grand street and float parade happened last weekend, which I wasn't able to witness because I was there last Tuesday and left the day after. Time may be limited, but I was able to take flower pictures:
These two flowers I captured around the grounds of SM City Baguio (a mall).

This one (is this Baby's Breath?) I captured after the event I attended, and was part of the floral centerpiece. Another reason why I love my camera: I can go as close as possible and still capture a great macro shot!

These three I captured along the grounds of the Staff House, while we were waiting for our companions before we travel back to Manila. Flowers are truly abundant during this time of the year in Baguio City... and I am happy to share that I will be traveling back to Baguio with my family this weekend. Hopefully time will be enough for me to capture more flowers from the Summer Capital of the Philippines.

For this prompt, I went ahead to find the quote first before I search my files for a suitable image. At first I was thinking of sharing an image of a man helping other boat men at the port of Hundred Islands, and while editing it, I remembered this particular image.

For sure I have shared this image and the story behind it on some of my blogs, but let me share it again. In 2009, I was vacationing in my mom's hometown and a boring afternoon made my niece Grace and I decide to walk to Macallawan to catch the sunset and enjoy the beauty of nature.

We saw this man from afar and I took time to capture this relationship of the man to the nature. When we got near him, my chatty niece (she's only 12 years old that time) asked the man a few questions, which led to us exchanging stories. He told us he left a few baskets underwater that morning and came back that dusk to gather the crabs. He wasn't particularly doing it for a living, he was just gathering seafood to feed his family, and although his catch wasn't that much, he still gave me one crab so I can have it for dinner, too. I understood that he has a big family and that I had dinner waiting at home that night (no need for me to be taking a piece of food from their table), but his random act of kindness was something so sincere and touching, that I decided to take it.

His act may be little, nameless, and unremembered for him... but it wasn't for me.

When I was still going to Colinas Verdes to walk and jog, weekends - particularly Saturdays - has got to be my favorite time to enjoy the place because there are just a lot of people walking and jogging... making me feel very motivated and inspired. I miss the place so much, so for this weekend, let me share two random images I took from one year ago:

This was taken on my way out of the area. Sure, there were a lot of fitness buffs who go there with complete outfit and gears, but there were a lot of people who also go there to enjoy a great morning with family.

This, on the other hand, was taken near the clubhouse. I actually zoomed in on this image...I was way too far from this mother and daughter, and because I was also walking as I took the picture, I wasn't able to notice that they were already too far right on my screen. I just found it too cute and too sweet for the mom to carry her daughter who probably was already tired, because the distance between the gate and the clubhouse was more or less 2 kilometers.
