This phrase was just part of a quite long statement at Jose Rizal's contemplation room in Fort Santiago. These words, etched on metal and lighted by flourescent lights surround the first part of the room, and a small door to the right leads the visitor to where Jose Rizal spent his last moments before his execution in Luneta, now known as the Rizal Park. I wasn't able to capture all that was written, but the statement speaks of the Philippines. The part where I took this partly goes, "I have always loved my poor country... I shall love her until my last moment... I shall die happy..."
This picture was taken 29 March 2009, when my siblings and I went to Manila City. We were supposed to go to the Manila South Harbor to check out the MV Doulos, but we arrived quite early, so we decided to just go to Fort Santiago first.
In a way, I framed these words as a personal credo. "Until my last moment, I shall die happy." Life is short to be anything but happy. Enjoy life, everyone... you can only have it once.
